SCBWI Brazos Valley is excited to announce Angela Dahle and Alda P. Dobbs as the winners of our inaugural Amplifying Unsung Voices Scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of founding SCBWI Brazos Valley member Kathi Appelt, we were able to offer an additional scholarship.
Angela Dahle was selected for her middle grade submission “Lulu and the Glass Eye.” She is a writer of picture books and middle grade novels and lives on the Space Coast of Florida with her family.
Alda P. Dobbs was selected for her middle grade submission “Barefoot Dreams of Petra Luna.” She is a writer from Montgomery, Texas.
The winners will receive a full registration scholarship* to attend the SCBWI Brazos Valley one-day Leap into Kid Lit conference to be held in College Station, Texas, on Feb. 29, 2020. They will also be offered one-on-one guidance on how to make the most of the conference.
SCBWI Brazos Valley would like to extend a thank you to all the members and non-members who applied for this scholarship. We hope to continue offering opportunities for children’s book writers and illustrators from traditionally underrepresented populations.

SCBWI Brazos Valley is happy to announce the inaugural Amplifying Unsung Voices scholarship for kid lit writers from traditionally underrepresented populations. The winning applicant will receive a full registration scholarship* to attend the SCBWI Brazos Valley one-day Leap into Kid Lit conference to be held in College Station, TX on Feb. 29, 2020.
Eligibility:
This scholarship is free of charge and open to both members and non-members of SCBWI. One submission per person. Authors who self-identify with traditionally underrepresented populations may apply for this scholarship. Please note, the submission itself does not have to center on underrepresented characters.
Submission guidelines:
Please prepare a single Word document with the following:
- A brief statement (100 words) explaining how you identify as part of an underrepresented population. Ex: I am second generation Honduran American.
- The manuscript’s title (without your byline) followed by the first 250 words.
- Document should be double spaced in Times New Roman 12 pt. font with one-inch margins.
- Do not include your name or address (judges will not see the bio information).
Please name the document with 1-3 identifying words from the title (or full title if less than three words) and the manuscript category (PB, MG, YA). Example: Sara-Idea-PB

Applications can be submitted to scholarship.bvscbwi@gmail.com between Sept. 15 and midnight CDT on Oct. 20. Applications submitted outside this window will be deleted. Winner will be announced Dec. 1, 2019.
*The scholarship is for conference registration only. Travel and housing costs, if needed, will be borne by the applicant.
